Between sound and sight

Between sounds and sight is a personnel response to the song The Passage the Fool the Dance by StandToOrder.

In collaboration with musician and writer Seb Wood, we created a joint response: my visual interpretation of the music, and Seb’s written reflections inspired by the images I shared with them in return. This ongoing dialogue forms the heart of the work, A call and response between sound, image, and word.

The book presents the project in its entirety. Designed in a loose-leaf format, it contains 14 individual pages that can be dismantled, rearranged, and re-sequenced. The pages include 36 images by Jamie Ball and 18 pieces of writing by Seb Wood.

While photographing Jamie listened to the song and recorded the exact time at which each image was taken. This allows the viewer to match each photo to the moment in the music, offering insight into the context of each image and how the sound may have influenced what Jamie saw.

There is no beginning, no end, only combinations. It invites you to explore your own connections between text and image, sound and meaning.

This is not a single story, but many possible ones, shaped by how you choose to move through it.
